How does the festival work?
Composers, Lyricists and Book writers (and collaborative teams) submit their original music, songs, scripts, plays and resumes to the festival for consideration--these range from unfinished projects to previously workshopped and established works . Based on their ideas and merit, twenty-four "projects" are selected. If requested, we will "pair" creative artists whose writing styles seem complimentary. Many excellent collaborations have been formed through this festival.
How are projects chosen?
After creative team applicants (composers, lyricists and book writers) submit their projects and/or resumes (by April 13th), the WVMTF artistic staff chooses the most qualified applicants and projects to participate in this year's festival.
How many applicants are chosen?
That's hard to predict this year. We have 24 individual festival shows and are also accepting composers, lyricists and book writers for the 90-minute high school show. That could mean we accept over 100 creative team members, 25 directors, 25 musical directors and a host of choreographers.
What is the deadline for applications?
Friday April 13th, 2012.
Isn't that Friday the 13th!?
Um, yes it is. So we expect to be weeding through psychologically profound work this year.
How are directors chosen?
Directors and Musical Directors apply to the festival separately. Projects that do not already have a director attached will be assigned a director after the first pre-production meeting (usually in April).
When does the festival take place?
The 4th-annual West Village Musical Theatre Festival performances and events will take place in the fall of 2013. Visit our tickets page for our performance calendar (coming soon).
What is a 'Series'?
This year's festival consists of four (4) series. Each series features 6 one act musicals that run 10-15 minutes each, making the series about 90 minutes long. Consider it a six-course performance. The series structure is what makes the festival unique, allowing audience members to see 6 new one act musicals in one short night at the theatre, for one low ticket price. In addition this year we will offer ticket discounts for multiple-series purchases.
How long is each 'Series'?
Series vary in length, but each is approximately 90 minutes long. The series run back to back performances with 30 minutes in between for set changeover. A detailed schedule will be posted closer to each year's event.
Where will the festival be held?
TBD
What other events?
